Method of suicide in the Northern Territory in the Indigenous population is predominantly by hanging and is a strong behavioural contagion; 86% of suicides are completed by this lethal method, leaving little window of opportunity for intervention and rescue.

Hanging and Alcohol Correlation

There is a correlation between method of suicide by hanging and alcohol related hanging, with 71% of victims consuming alcohol prior to suicide, evidence of behavioural contagion 1996–2006.

Hanging and Other Substances

There is a correlation between hanging and the proportion of cannabis present in toxicology results in approximately 30% of victims 1996–2006.

Hanging and Age

The age breakdown and method of completed suicide in Indigenous people in the Northern Territory 1996 – 2006 shows hanging as the most used and accessible means across the life span. Hanging method is used in 100% of children aged 10 to 14 years, when completing suicide.

Near hanging presentations at clinics and emergency departments were discharged to their pre-hanging residences. This research identified that 65% of completed suicides occurred in or around the home.
